Does Checking Credit score lowers it?

Many people have a misconception that simply checking their credit score can negatively impact it. However, the truth is more nuanced. Here’s a breakdown of the different types of credit inquiries and their effect on your credit score:

Types of Credit Inquiries

  • Hard inquiries: These inquiries occur when a lender requests your credit report to evaluate your creditworthiness for a loan, credit card, or other line of credit. Hard inquiries can stay on your credit report for up to two years, and multiple hard inquiries within a short period can slightly lower your score (typically by a few points).
  • Soft inquiries: These inquiries occur when you check your own credit report or when a potential employer, insurance company, or landlord checks your credit without applying for new credit. Soft inquiries do not affect your credit score in any way.

Understanding the Impact

While hard inquiries can impact your score, it’s important to understand the context:

  • The impact is usually minimal: A single hard inquiry typically reduces your score by a few points (generally less than 5 points). If you have a good credit history (typically above 720), the impact will be even smaller.
  • Multiple inquiries within a short period can have a greater impact: If you’re applying for multiple loans or lines of credit within a short timeframe (typically within 30 to 45 days), these multiple inquiries can be grouped together as a single inquiry on your credit report, minimizing the negative impact.
  • Focus on responsible credit management: The biggest factor influencing your credit score is your overall credit behavior, such as on-time payments, credit utilization ratio (amount of credit used compared to the credit limit), and length of credit history. Maintaining responsible credit management practices will have a far greater impact on your score than occasional hard inquiries.
Strategies for Minimizing the Impact of Inquiries
  • Shop around for the best rates: If you’re considering various loan or credit card options, compare rates and terms online before applying. This can help you narrow down your choices and minimize the number of hard inquiries.
  • Space out your applications: If you need to apply for multiple lines of credit, try to space them out over time. This will help minimize the number of hard inquiries grouped together on your report.
  • Be mindful of pre-approved offers: Responding to pre-approved credit card offers typically triggers a hard inquiry. Only consider these offers if you are genuinely interested in applying.
Remember
  • Checking your credit report with a soft inquiry is safe and does not impact your score. This allows you to monitor your credit for any errors or suspicious activity.
  • Be mindful of hard inquiries: While occasional hard inquiries may have a minimal impact, consider spacing out applications and shopping around to minimize their effect on your score.
  • Focus on building and maintaining good credit habits: Paying bills on time, keeping your credit utilization ratio low, and maintaining a healthy credit history are the most crucial factors in improving and maintaining a good credit score.

By understanding the different types of inquiries and their impact, you can confidently manage your credit and make informed decisions that positively affect your financial health.
